Jaik Mickleburgh claimed a career-best 243 as Essex took control against Leicestershire on day three of their Division Two match at Chelmsford.
Mickleburgh, with 28 fours and one six, and Ben Foakes (120) took the hosts to 521, with James Skyes taking 4-176 for bottom-placed Leicestershire.
But when they batted again, Greg Smith took 2-8 to leave them struggling.
Leicestershire, still winless in the Championship this season, will start the last day on 47-3, 109 behind.
