Derbyshire frustrated Division One leaders Durham on a rain-shortened first day at the County Ground.
Chris Rushworth bowled Ben Slater for 13 as Derbyshire's first wicket fell with 33 on the board.
But any hopes the visitors had of more wickets were cut short as Paul Borrington (30 not out) and Wayne Madsen (32 not out) put on 66.
The relegation-threatened hosts had reached 99-1 when rain brought an early end to the day's play.
