The opening day of Gloucestershire's Division Two match against Essex was washed out without a ball being bowled.
Heavy showers peppered Bristol throughout the day, leaving the umpires with little choice but to call off proceedings in mid-afternoon.
Gloucestershire are aiming for their first victory in 2014 while Essex are looking to get their second win after a draw with Surrey in the last game.
But, with more rain forecast, a draw already looks the most likely outcome.
