Derbyshire's Scott Elstone and David Wainwright both made half centuries before rain curtailed the second day's play at home to Gloucestershire.
Resuming on 166-6, Elstone (63) and Wainwright (54 not out) led their side's recovery with a 70-run stand.
But Elstone went to Will Gidman after his maiden first-class fifty in only his second game and Wainwright was left stranded as collapsed to 278 all out.
The visitors then made 21-0 before the adverse conditions stopped play.
Michael Klinger (12 not out) and Chris Dent (eight not out) are the overnight batsmen.
