Australia's Peter Siddle took 4-65 as Notts prevented Yorkshire from building a big lead on day three at Headingley.
The home side were bowled out for 247, with Aaron Finch and Richard Pyrah the joint top-scorers with 45 each.
Pace bowler Siddle was well supported by spinner Samit Patel, who produced a beauty to bowl Finch and claimed 3-13.
It gave Yorkshire a lead of only 42, and Notts replied with 102-2 at stumps in their second innings after a short interruption by rain.
Michael Lumb was 43 not out, with James Taylor on 27, the pair having added 72 after Alex Hales was lbw to Tim Bresnan for eight and Phil Jaques edged Steve Patterson to the wicketkeeper after making 20.
The efforts of the Notts bowlers earlier in the day appear to have ensured that, barring a dramatic batting collapse on the final day, they will leave with at least a draw.
Resuming on 76-2, Yorkshire soon lost Jack Leaning, bowled by Luke Fletcher for 41, and slumped to 128-6 before Finch and Bresnan (25) added 56 for the seventh wicket.
Bresnan edged Siddle to first slip immediately after lunch and Patel then turned one past the outside edge of Finch's bat to hit the top of off stump.
Pyrah struck seven fours in an aggressive knock, but then swept a catch to Siddle at backward square leg as Patel picked up the final two wickets to end the innings.

"Thanks to 45 runs apiece from Finch and Pyrah, Yorkshire carved out a first innings lead of 42.
"They then removed Hales and Jaques, but were halted by a fine partnership from Lumb and Taylor, so we go into final day and a lot of wickets need to fall for a positive result."

"Notts probably got as much out of the third day as they could have hoped for.
"Limiting the first innings deficit to just 42 was a bonus, as was the timely stand between Lumb and Taylor in the late evening sunlight that stretched their advantage to 60.
"Earlier, Peter Siddle led the attack magnificently, but the ball from Samit Patel that removed Aaron Finch was the moment of the day, turning from middle and leg to clip the top of off."
