Gareth Batty and Zafar Ansari shared eight wickets as Surrey closed in on victory over Derbyshire.

Spinners Batty (4-69) and Ansari (4-96) got through 67 overs between them as the home side struggled in the face of a first-innings deficit of 268 runs.

Scott Elstone (47) and spinner David Wainwright (56 not out) offered dogged resistance as Derbyshire at least made sure of avoiding an innings defeat.

But they were bowled out for 288 to leave Surrey needing just 21 to win.

Surrey's last two wickets added 29 to their overnight total as they made 421 in their first innings, with Mark Footitt claiming a fourth scalp for Derbyshire.

Although Stephen Moore, Paul Borrington and Wayne Madsen all got starts, Batty's off-breaks and slow-left armer Anzari, who scored his maiden hundred the day before, made the most of a wearing surface as wickets fell steadily.

Surrey claimed the extra half an hour to try to force victory inside three days and, although they polished off the home side, they will have to return on the final morning to complete the job.
