Northants' overseas player Ian Butler has retired from all cricket and returned to his native New Zealand because of an ongoing injury problem.

The seamer, 32, last played for the Division One side on 3 June in their Championship match against Yorkshire.

Butler picked up four wickets in two Championship matches and six in four T20 Blast games.

"Ian was a positive influence in the dressing room," head coach David Ripley told the club website.

"Unfortunately couldn't contribute as fully as both of us would have wanted on the field."

Fellow New Zealand pace bowler Neil Wagner will come in as Butler's replacement and is due to play his first match in the County Championship against Nottinghamshire on 15 August.

Butler played eight Tests, 26 one-day internationals and 19 Twenty20 internationals for the Black Caps between 2002 and 2013.
