Hampshire collapsed to a five-run defeat as Essex booked their place in the quarter-finals of the One-Day Cup.

Set 325 to win at Chelmsford, Hampshire slipped from 246-2 after James Vince fell for 79 and Adam Wheater 135 off 97 balls against his former county.

Needing 35 off the last five overs with five wickets in hand, the visitors stumbled to 319-9.

Earlier, Jesse Ryder hit 87 and Tom Westley 74 in Essex's 324 after Hampshire won the toss.

The New Zealand batsman struck nine fours and three sixes in his 61-ball innings, while England's Ravi Bopara weighed in with 51 off 52 deliveries.

Essex lost their last six wickets for 56 runs, which threatened to undermine their chances of progressing as Wheater and Vince added 198 for the third Hampshire wicket.

However, David Masters removed Vince on the way to figures of 3-51, while Graham Napier struck twice in two overs in between the run-outs of Will Smith and Chris Wood.
