Essex kept themselves in the promotion picture by completing a 63-run win over Glamorgan in Swansea.

Monty Panesar finished with 6-118, and match figures of 11-168, as they needed only 11.2 overs to claim the final two wickets required for victory.

Graham Wagg was first to go for 64, when he gave a bat-pad catch to Nick Browne off slow left-armer Panesar.

Michael Hogan made a rapid 25, but was then caught and bowled by Tom Westley as Glamorgan were all out for 284.

No joy for Welsh county
Essex are now unbeaten in 10 Championship matches against Glamorgan - but seven of the previous nine ended in draws

Hogan's departure left Dean Cosker unbeaten on 18 as Essex wrapped up their fourth Championship win of the summer.

It lifted them temporarily into second place, 45 points behind leaders Worcestershire, and locked in a battle with Surrey and Hampshire for a promotion spot.

And Panesar's performance, having opened the bowling in the second innings, suggested that if wickets continue to turn, they can approach their final three games with confidence.

Overlooked by England, he has taken 37 wickets in 11 Division Two games this summer at an average of 26.37.

Glamorgan still had hope of reaching their target of 348 while Wagg remained, but the all-rounder only managed to add four to his overnight score before departing.
