Northants failed to reach the One-Day Cup quarter-finals after a four-wicket defeat by already-through Essex.

Northants had a slim chance of progress prior to the match, and David Willey (113), Richard Levi (84) and Rob Keogh (50) saw them dismissed for 311.

But Essex rallied, with openers Mark Pettini (88) and Tom Westley (62) putting on 94 before Ravi Bopara's 61.

Tim Phillips' four with just three balls left led Essex home as the final last-eight spot went to Derbyshire.

Derbyshire's 53-run win over Gloucestershire, combined with Leicestershire's defeat against Lancashire, meant that Northants would have been knocked out whatever the result at Wantage Road.

However, Essex end their Group A campaign second and will now face a home quarter-final against Warwickshire.
