England make Alastair Cook unavailable for Essex run-in

Cook has been under pressure to step aside as England one-day captain

England have made captain Alastair Cook unavailable for Essex's remaining County Championship games this season.

The 29-year-old is the only national squad member who has not been released for the end of the campaign.

But England have requested that their international seam bowlers do not play on the final week of the county season.

After Sunday's final one-day match against India, England will not be in action until the one-day series in Sri Lanka, which starts on 26 November.

This gives seam bowlers James Anderson, Steven Finn and Chris Woakes a six-week break - after they have played for their respective counties in the next round of Championship fixtures.

Many counties have two Championship fixtures remaining, with some still having three to play.

Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Tim Bresnan will all be available for the remaining two fixtures of Division One table-toppers Yorkshire, one of which is at Trent Bridge against second-placed Nottinghamshire, who will be able to select international trio Alex Hales, James Taylor and Harry Gurney.

Division Two leaders Worcestershire will have Moeen Ali back to help their promotion push.

Warwickshire will be able to select Woakes and Ian Bell, providing he recovers from the broken toe that kept him out of England's final ODI against India, for the Royal London One-Day Cup final at Lord's on 20 September against Durham, for whom Stokes will be available.

England's seven-game series in Sri Lanka finishes on 16 December, before a one-day triangular series in January with hosts Australia and India which precedes the World Cup starting in February.
