A dramatic final-session collapse by Nottinghamshire meant their final match of the summer ended in a 191-run defeat at home by Sussex.
Sussex set a target of 384 when they declared on 406-6 before lunch, after Ed Joyce's 149 and 79 by Luke Wells.
Notts appeared likely to hold out for a draw after James Taylor (46) helped them reach tea on 100-3.
But Steve Magoffin (4-51), Ashar Zaidi (3-50) and Chris Jordan (2-54) combined to bowl them out for 193.
Nottinghamshire's defeat means Warwickshire are now in pole position to finish as runners-up in this year's Championship, and win £100,000 in prize money.
The home side went into last week's round of games still in with a chance of becoming champions, but their demolition by Yorkshire gave the White Rose county the title.

Sussex owed much to the form of Joyce and Wells, the latter hitting his sixth Championship fifty of the season, to help set them on their way.
Taylor and Riki Wessels (37) then looked well set, but after their 69-run partnership was brought to an end when Wessels was yorked by Jordan, Notts began to unravel.
Following the loss of Taylor, who was caught behind down the leg-side, to leave them 140-5, the hosts crumbled in the space of 17 overs for just another 52 runs despite 20 by skipper Chris Read.
Meanwhile, Notts have announced 21-year-old batsman Sam Kelsall has been released by the club, after making three-first class and four List 'A' appearances.
Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell:
"We were poor today. I don't think we should have been bowled out on that pitch, even given Steve Magoffin's bowling.
"That has found us out over the last three or four matches, we've not had the bowling to match the opposition.
"If we finish sixth that's what we deserve."
Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson:
"I'm delighted and always thought we could bowl them out if we scored enough runs. It was important that Steve Magoffin knocked over their top two and to get Alex Hales, who can score so quickly, was crucial.
"I've a certain empathy for Notts because they have challenged on all three fronts and just ran out of steam a bit at the end and we've been there before, we know what that's like.
"We had a 19-day break with no cricket but have really come back strong to win two out of two and will go to Northampton next week looking to make it three out of three."
