Batsman Mark Pettini has signed a new one-year deal with Essex.
The 31-year-old has scored 7,230 first-class runs in 144 appearances since making his debut for the club in 2001.
While Pettini, a former Essex captain, has distinguished himself as a limited-overs specialist in recent years, he is available to feature in the County Championship for the Division Two side.
"His experience will prove useful for some of the younger players," said Essex head coach Paul Grayson.
"With our ambition to win a one-day competition next year, Mark will be an invaluable asset.
"His role is to get us off to a flying start with his aggressive approach, and this season he did this well."
Pettini scored 232 runs in the One-Day Cup this summer at an average of 38.67 and strike rate of 82.56, while he was Essex's second-highest scorer in the T20 Blast with 424 runs, averaging 32.62 at strike rate of 134.18.
