Andrew McDonald is set to be named as Leicestershire's new head coach later this week, reports BBC Radio Leicester.
The 33-year-old former Australia all-rounder spent two seasons with Leicestershire as a player in 2010 and 2011 and was part of the side that won the domestic T20 Cup in 2011.
McDonald has been playing club cricket in Australia but is not expected to register as a player.
He will replace Phil Whitticase, whose position at the club remains unclear.
Leicestershire chief executive Wasim Khan confirmed a new head coach would be named by the "end of the week".
Khan added: "It will hopefully put the club in a good light and show we are moving in the right direction."
