Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White says all-rounder Gareth Berg has made good progress on the county's pre-season trip to Barbados.

Cape-Town born Berg, 34, was released by Middlesex after missing most of last season following shoulder surgery.

Berg, signed by Hampshire in February, will help make up for the loss of Matt Coles, who has been released.

"I was pleased with the way he went," White told BBC Radio Solent. "Gareth, in particular, will need game time."

White continued: "He took it step by step and I think that is what he has got to do.

"His last spell out there was close to where he wants to be and this next week is very important for him, but he is in a good place."

On the trip, Hampshire lost in the semi-final of the T20 Barbados Cup to Northants and played two-day games against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.

Hampshire begin the new Championship season against Sussex at The Ageas Bowl on 12 April.
