Adam Voges and Nick Gubbins narrowly missed out on centuries as Middlesex reached 306-7 on a weather-interrupted second day at Taunton.
The pair came together after Lewis Gregory removed Sam Robson and Nick Compton to leave Middlesex on 60-2.
They added 139 before Gubbins went for 92, edging a ball from Jamie Overton (3-42) to Marcus Trescothick at slip.
Gregory (4-93) then had Voges lbw for 98 and also removed Neil Dexter as Middlesex ended the day 102 behind.

The visitors did well to bowl out Somerset for 408 on the opening day after they had been 377-3 at one stage, but they needed a solid batting display to get close to posting a similar total.
They certainly did not get the start they wanted as Gregory's second ball of the day saw Robson give Trescothick his first catch of the day.
Gubbins and Compton put on exactly 50 for the second wicket, but the latter, playing against his former county, was then adjudged to have edged to the keeper and departed reluctantly for 28.
It was Somerset's last success for 38 overs as Gubbins and Voges batted well either side of hold-ups for rain and bad light which meat that tea was taken early with the score on 194-2.
Middlesex did enough to save the follow-on in the final session, with James Franklin unbeaten on 41, but it was Somerset who finished with the upper hand after claiming five more wickets, including two for Overton in the same over with the new ball.
