Leicestershire reached 56-3 in reply to Gloucestershire's 218 on a difficult opening day for batsmen at Cheltenham.
Having been put in by visiting captain Mark Cosgrove, Chris Dent was trapped lbw by Clint McKay (5-59) inside the first three overs to set the tone.
Gareth Roderick (61) offered some resistance but McKay took the last two wickets in successive balls to limit the hosts to a single batting point.
James Fuller ended with 2-8 from five overs as the Foxes stuttered in reply.
Cosgrove (26 not out) and Jigar Naik were unbeaten at the close, with Leicestershire still 162 runs behind.
