Ravi Bopara shone with bat and ball to inspire Essex to a comprehensive seven-wicket One-Day Cup win over Lancashire.
The all-rounder took 4-31 and Reece Topley claimed 2-40 as Lancashire were bundled out for just 161 at Chelmsford, with Alex Davies top-scoring with 37.
Bopara then struck a superb 101 not out from 98 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes to help the hosts to 163-3.
He also shared a second-wicket stand of 98 with opener Mark Pettini (37) as Essex got home with 17 overs to spare.
Kyle Jarvis 2-26 was the stand-out bowler for Lancashire, who were earlier put in on a pitch that offered seam movement.
But Essex took full advantage with a disciplined bowling performance that saw no other Lancashire player apart from Davies reach 25.
Essex all-rounder Ravi Bopara:
"Obviously I'm delighted with my own performance, but the really important thing is that it helped to get us the win.
"With the squad we have, this is a competition that we have targeted this season and this is a good start."
Lancashire captain Steven Croft:
"The toss was vital. The wicket was a bit tricky and sticky early on and they had the bowlers to suit.
"We bowled with discipline throughout their innings, which I was pleased about but, yes, the toss was vital."
