Surrey's Rory Burns hit a marvellous 157 not out to give his side a chance of a first innings lead against Essex on day two of their Championship match.
Essex lost Mark Pettini (134) early on at Colchester, lbw to Tom Curran, as they finished their innings on 369.
Surrey fell to 112-4, but Burns put on half-century stands with Gary Wilson and Gareth Batty to steady things.
Despite Monty Panesar (3-95) enjoying a fine spell with the ball, Burns batted on to help Surrey close on 301-7.
Burns' 233-ball knock, his highest score in the Championship this season, included 22 fours and changed Surrey's fortunes after the quick dismissal of Zafar Ansari for just 6.
But the opener added 75 with Wilson (37), before the wicketkeeper was trapped leg-before to Jamie Porter, and 62 with skipper Batty to ensure the visitors ended the day on top.
The highlight for Essex was the three wickets for the returning Panesar, playing in his first County Championship game since April.
