Essex batsman Tom Westley hit a fine unbeaten 90 as they built a 237-run lead over Surrey on day three at Colchester.
Teenager Sam Curran added a useful 30 off 43 balls to take Surrey from 301-7 to 346 all out before lunch.
After his 114 on Friday, Nick Browne managed 29 in Essex's second innings before he was bowled by Gareth Batty.
But Westley hit 10 fours in his 170-ball knock and put on 65 with James Foster as Essex closed on 214-4.
Earlier, Rory Burns could only add one run to his overnight 157 before he was removed by Jamie Porter (4-96) in the second over, but 17-year-old Sam Curran took them to within 23 of Essex's first innings score.
A number of Essex batsmen got starts in their second innings, but Westley went on to close in on his second Championship century of the summer.
Surrey all-rounder Zafar Ansari told BBC London 94.9:
"They batted well and it's not an easy wicket. We would have liked to have bowled them out but we're satisfied with the work we put in.
"I think we feel that we're in the game and we can win. If you look at our batting line up there are people who can turn the game very quickly.
"If we can get off to a good start and restrict them as much as we can then we're in the game."
