Hampshire's survival fight was given a boost as they sealed a 216-run win over third-placed Warwickshire, whose own title ambitions took a setback.

The Bears resumed on 161-6 at the Ageas Bowl - still 283 runs off their target of 444 - and lost Rikki Clarke (55) to Jackson Bird's fourth ball of the day.

Fidel Edwards (4-55) took two more wickets to end with match figures of 9-87 as the visitors were out for 227.

Hampshire remain bottom while the Bears are 50 points behind Yorkshire.

However, with Sussex losing to Middlesex, Hampshire are now just three points behind their south coast rivals and five points behind Worcestershire in seventh.

Edwards rolls back the years
The 33-year-old has taken 22 wickets in four Championship games this summer at an average of 21.45.

Any hopes Warwickshire had of saving the game with some inclement weather around were dealt a blow when Clarke was caught by Joe Gatting at mid-wicket in the first over.

West Indies paceman Edwards claimed his third victim of the innings in the next over when he trapped Keith Barker lbw for nought, and he then removed Jeetan Patel shortly afterwards to leave the visitors nine wickets down.

Chris Woakes (42) and Boyd Rankin delayed the inevitable with a last-wicket stand of 41, before Will Smith bowled Woakes to give Hampshire their first home win of the season.
