Arun Harinath and Gary Wilson's stand of 92 helped Surrey chase 313 to beat Essex by three wickets at Colchester.

After Tom Westley was out for 90 to the fifth ball of the day, Essex moved on to 289-9 before declaring.

Following his first innings' 158, Surrey opener Rory Burns struck 71 from 99 balls to set them on their way.

Harinath (87) and Wilson took the visitors to 297-4, before Essex claimed three quick wickets, but Wilson's unbeaten 56 helped them to 314-7.

Earlier, Gareth Batty took three wickets in the morning to finish with figures of 5-102.

With Essex declaring before lunch, Burns led Surrey's charge but their chase suffered a blow when he fell to Aron Nijjar (2-83) and Steve Davies was out in the next over to Westley (4-75).

However Harinath's 159-ball knock and Wilson's rapid innings saw Surrey to victory as they closed the gap on Division Two leaders Lancashire to 10 points.
