James Hildreth's fine century put Somerset in control against Worcestershire on the opening day of their Championship match at Taunton.

The right-hander made 133 not out as the hosts reached 349-5 at stumps.

Earlier, skipper Marcus Trescothick hit 85 and Tom Cooper 57 as the pair put on 108 for the second wicket.

Jack Shantry (2-59) gave Worcestershire a boost when he removed Jim Allenby for 50 late on, after he had shared a century partnership with Hildreth.

James Hildreth - a fine county record
The 30-year-old has scored 13,071 first-class runs at an average of 43.42. He has 61 half-centuries to go alongside his 34 hundreds

Somerset's batting dominance came after losing opener Johann Myburgh, who was lbw to Shantry for nought in just the fourth over of the day.

Hildreth brought up his 34th first-class century off 143 balls, and by the close he had 21 boundaries to his name.

Trescothick had looked set for his first Championship hundred since April, but fell 15 runs short when he was bowled attempting to paddle sweep spinner Brett D'Oliveira.

Worcestershire spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has only taken 16 Championship wickets this summer at an average of 45.12, endured another disappointing day with figures of 0-58.
