Mark Cosgrove passed 1,000 first-class runs this season as Leicestershire had the edge on day three against Essex.

No play was possible on the first two days and when the teams finally reached the middle, Jesse Ryder took early wickets to reduce the hosts to 27-2.

Cosgrove (94) put on 94 for the third wicket with Angus Robson (50), before adding 99 with Aadil Ali (33 not out).

Ryder (4-77) took two wickets in three balls, including Niall O'Brien for a duck, as the hosts closed on 222-5.

Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove:

"We play every game to win and we'll come in (on Thursday) and think up a way how we can take it forward.

"We'll probably only have 85 overs, but we'll give them a chance to set up a game."
