Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen narrowly missed out on a century on day two against Leicestershire.
Madsen hit 14 fours in his 95 at the County Ground, but was bowled by Ollie Freckingham with the second new ball.
Ben Slater had earlier given the home side a solid start to their innings, making 70 before becoming teenager Zak Chappell's first Championship victim.
Seam bowler Freckingham took 3-64 as Derbyshire reached 281-7, still 48 in arrears, at the close of play.
The home side lost two wickets in a brief concluding passage of play after an interruption for bad light with Tom Poynton lbw to Ben Raine (2-57) for a duck and Tom Knight bowled by Freckingham for 25, a double setback to their hopes of a first-innings lead.
However, Derbyshire only need one more bonus point to ensure they will not finish next to bottom of the Division Two table, providing they can also win the game.
