Nottinghamshire struggled in reply to Hampshire's 270, as they ended the second day at the Ageas Bowl on 99-5.

The visitors resumed on 149-4, but soon lost Sean Ervine when he was bowled by Luke Fletcher for 42.

Harry Gurney took 4-61, including the wicket of top-scorer Tom Alsop (72), as bowler James Tomlinson's 21 not out helped Hampshire to two batting points.

Notts lost Steven Mullaney off just the third ball before Ryan McLaren's fierce spell of 3-13 put the hosts on top.

Jake Ball, who will rejoin the England setup ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Friday, failed to add any further scalps despite regularly beating the batsmen in the morning.

However, Gurney enjoyed a more fruitful day as he had Alsop and Adam Wheater caught behind, trapped Tino Best lbw and had McLaren caught cheaply.

The away side's response got off to a disastrous start, with Jake Libby following Mullaney back to the pavilion after he was brilliantly run out by Michael Carberry.

McLaren then caused chaos, as the South African bowler broke Michael Lumb and Brendon Taylor's 45-run third-wicket partnership by having Lumb caught in the slips, before removing Taylor and Samit Patel.

Reduced to 72-5, Riki Wessels and captain Chris Read managed to hold off the Hampshire attack for the rest of the day.
