Opener Newton was 58 not out overnight and passed three figures off 208 balls.
He was bowled for 108 by David Payne (3-72) shortly after he had taken his side, who resumed 122 runs behind on 120-3, to a slender lead.
Crook (103 not out), supported by lower-order colleagues, took Northants to 399-8 when a draw was agreed.
