Hampshire secured a thrilling 69-run victory over Nottinghamshire at the Ageas Bowl for their first Championship win of the season.

The visitors looked set to chase down 305, as Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel shared a 108-run fifth-wicket stand.

Needing 128 runs after tea to win with five wickets left, Tino Best quickly removed Dan Christian and Brett Hutton.

Patel and Harry Gurney then fell to Mason Crane and with Chris Read unable to bat, Notts were all out for 235.

Gurney had earlier grabbed his first five-wicket haul of the season, as he trapped Ryan McLaren lbw - but not before the South African hit a valuable 43.

Captain Will Smith, in charge following James Vince's England call-up, eventually declared on 223-9 - leaving the away side 86 overs to chase down their target.

The fiery Best (4-47) soon had the hosts on top as Jake Libby edged the ex-West Indies bowler behind and Michael Lumb was struck plumb in front to leave Notts 68-4, with McLaren also striking twice.

However, Taylor and Patel batted with ease as the ball got older, with their century stand giving Notts momentum before Taylor eventually fell for 71 as he sent Crane (3-70) high into the sky but straight to Best.

The pair returned after tea and produced a destructive spell of bowling, clinching the final four Notts wickets between them in just 19 balls to condemn the visitors to their second successive loss.
