Mark Cosgrove and Mark Pettini led Leicestershire's recovery as they fought back from a perilous position to reach 340-8 on day one against Kent.
Leicestershire collapsed to 43 all out in Tuesday's three-day loss to Worcestershire at Grace Road.
And fears of another low score grew when Matt Coles and Darren Stevens reduced them to 19-3 inside 10 overs.
But Cosgrove (119) and Pettini (97) put on 218 for the fourth wicket to give the visitors a foothold in the match.
Leicestershire captain Cosgrove reached his second Championship century of the season off 127 balls in just over three hours at the crease.
Darren Stevens told BBC Radio Kent:
"We'll take 340-8. They were 19-3 and obviously you want to make the most of that, but Pettini and Cosgrove dug in and played brilliantly.
"I suppose there's a little bit of an incentive every time I play Leicestershire as I got released from there, so I always want to do well against them.
"When we bat, we won't be happy unless we get 450 plus being that it's a good pitch. If we can get through the new ball we should post a good total."
