Chris Rushworth took four wickets to help Durham take control on day one of the match with Lancashire at Southport.

Lancashire reached lunch on 81-2 after choosing to bat, before Paul Coughlin (2-32) saw off Luke Procter (30) to end his 66-run stand with Alviro Peterson.

After Peterson was run out for 51, they collapsed to 204 all out, with only Steven Croft (54) really contributing.

Lancashire and England paceman James Anderson took the wicket of Keaton Jennings, but Durham closed on 88-3.

Anderson, who was returning from the injury that kept him out of England's first Test against Pakistan, could not add to that wicket as Mark Stoneman (40) and Scott Borthwick (37 not out) helped Durham move to 116 runs behind.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, but in the first over, Ben Stokes - another England international continuing his return from injury - brilliantly caught Tom Smith off Rushworth.

Haseeb Hameed (10) was the other victim in the morning, before an afternoon session in which Lancashire went from 92-2 to 168-7, with Tom Moores, son of former England coach Peter, making 25 on his first-class debut.

And Anderson was left stranded as Croft was caught and bowled by Rushworth to finish the innings.
