Derbyshire opener Ben Slater hit his first County Championship century of 2016 but his side struggled on day one against Gloucestershire in Derby.
Slater shared a 91-run first-wicket stand with Billy Godleman (31) before the latter was caught off Craig Miles.
Derbyshire then collapsed to 97-3 as Miles (4-30) dismantled the top order and despite Slater's 110 the hosts were bowled out for 242.
The visitors closed on 27-1, skipper Gareth Roderick going cheaply.
Slater's century came off 168 balls and included 12 boundaries as the 25-year-old passed fifty for just the second time in Division Two this season.
