With a name like Root he can't go wrong
Good luck to Joe Root on his appointment as England Test Captain.I suspect he will be looking to lead by example a la Graham Gooch.
JDHCOYS @192I agree about off-field but disagree about on-field. Captaincy is also about lifting the side when it's going wrong, sensing when the game is starting to drift away & having the ability & courage of your convictions to do something innovative. It's about stepping back from your own game & looking at the bigger picture. A lot of great players have struggled with that (eg Boycott).
JDHCOYS @193 That's exactly my point.Central Contracts have created a separate group of players who don't actually play games outside of Internationals. You can develop batting, bowling and fielding techniques in a training centre, but you can't train "match sense" or decision-making except in matches. Hence poor captaincy and shot selection, and bowlers who can't put the batsman under pressure.
@196.Robin - are you saying Root is a soft touch? You know this because?
No options! Stokes wants a fight. Broad reviews when he's bowled and Anderson cries and gets tongue tied infront of any audience.Ps. How come other countries have strong leaders? Kohli Smith etc. We get the soft xxxxs.
Hope it goes well but I have some concerns! Captaincy seems to make good batsmen better Kohli, Smith, Williamson etc but it seems to stifle players who already carry that tag of star batsman "the wicket every other teams wants" (Lara, Tendulkar, Pieterson) Also his previous record (all be it limited) is "nothing to write home about" at best? Didn't he earn the nickname "crap-tain" at Yorkshire??
181What nonsense. He is a professional sportsman by occupation and would be away anyway playing in all forms of cricket so being captain should not increase his time away from family. There is no doubt he is best choice.
@188.boating-voter - "It'd have been far better to have a CAPTAIN as captain" So who do you suggest given the current state of county cricket? Who knows Root may be the CAPTAIN as you put it!
@188.boating-voter - agree to a point, there should be training for all that want to progress to captain, not so much for on field tactics because if you have a decent cricket brain you should know how you are going to play and get your team to execute. Off field is where they need support. My feeling is that Root will not struggle with this, he comes across as a very positive character.
@173.spangles - Why is appointing Stokes as vice captain a bad move? How can you possibly know? Just being negative without any reason to be. For all you know it might be the making of him.
