Trouble with tests is it is too easy to get a draw, even after 5 whole days.
Here is my team for 1st test v South AfricaCook, Hameed, Jennings, Root, Bairstow , stokes, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Andersen/ Overton/ Leach depending on the pitch.
@115. I have to agree with you. Test cricket is absorbing, football is painful. Though I'd love to watch a test, if it was on FTA. Not lining Murdoch's pocket. Though cricket one of those sports that's great on radio too.
Stewart @111.A good point - tho to be fair it's not only the increase in International games, but the County calendar now has a lot of pyjama games that didn't exist then.So current International players have the double whammy of a congested International calendar & an ever more sparse FC County Ch'ship.I for one would accept a bit less Int'l cricket overall if it led to better QUALITY.
@50 Those who moan about the cost of Sky should remember that you can get a tin of paint cheaper, paint a wall and watch it dry-just as interesting as watching English cricket team. =========This makes me laugh I would happilly sit all day and watch a test match, but if I watch soccer I record it first then watch it on fast forward because 90 minutes is too long to watch a footbal match
looking forward to the summer tests and essex in div1.....roll on the cricket season.
@57 Half a century ago most people had 1 month's total holiday per year (as in the USA today) and went on holiday to Brighton, Blackpool etc.Today many people have 6 weeks per year and go abroad for 2 weeks in the summer and maybe a week for a winter break. If they can find the time and money for this, they can find the time and money for test cricket if they really want to.
My previous post did not mention the "dead" days in between matches when England players are not available to their counties. There are usually 2 days between England's white ball games and players may have to report for test duty more than a day before the match. With tours and international tournaments overlapping the start or end of a season the likes of Root/Stokes can only fit in an odd game
@89 The only way to get players to play more county cricket is to reduce the internationals. In the 50's counties played 32 3-day championship games plus at least 4 other 1st class games (tourists, MCC, Oxford & Cambridge) - 108 days of 1st class cricket minimum against 5 or 6 tests - 30 days maximum. Today 64 days 1st class (4X16) against 7 test & 12 white ball games = 47 days.
@34 Finn has had his ups & downs. He needs confidence and rhythm to be at his best. Despite his well publicised problems he has the best strike rate in test cricket of all England's current bowlers, very close to Darren Gough's and much better than the great Brian Statham's.
Re Buttler. If we are talking about test cricket then we need a proper wicketkeeper. That is someone who can keep wicket. Buttler - is fantastic for T20/50 overs but the test team should be looking at someone like Ben Foulkes. A proper wicketkeeper and a very decent batsman. That's the way forward
Oh for goodness sake give Ben Stokes a chance! 2 minutes into the job and already people are gunning for him. He makes a positive statement and all people can do is grump about stuff that is outside his control anyway. My one comment to both him and more so Root actually, would be don't spit your dummy out when things don't go your way. That is my one reservation about both of these young men.
Stokes and England have to come to terms with the fact unless Tests return to FTA the public will never love it. A sport to grow and prosper needs to be available to as wider an audience as possible. Not hidden behind a pay tv wall ghetto. Otherwise it's just talking to an existing fanbase and it will eventually dwindle. Golf is going the same way. It ain't rocket science.
put cricket back on free to air TV
Moeen scored 4 centuries last year moving around the order. How does he fit in if Butler is 7? Do they. Ring in Leach or Rayner when. Needed and what about Rashid. Can Moeen bat 8 and be 2nd spinner . Lots for Root and stokes to work out
Mr Christian @101 - You flatter me greatly, but thank you all the same! My batting's fallen away in the last few years, I struggle to get going - tho' once in a while I last long enough to realise I'm enjoying myself :-)JDH @100/102 - I agree, they fulfil different roles. Some games it might be a case of either/or, but in others they both should play. And yes, Stokes' bowling will improve.
Sky is over-priced, mediocre & on a downward slope. Sky movies, atrocious, Sky sports, well there's a reason why they have the "rights" for MLS. And with rising inflation, rising interest rates, and a debt-ridden society, Sky will struggle. For the rest of us, Andriod, google "Mobdro".
@99 - What I will also say is that although Stokes bowls too many "4" balls he can also have one of those golden spells as well, a little bit like Broad to a smaller extent. As he gains experience I expect his bowling to improve greatly, the talent is there. Even if he doesn't come from Yorkshire!
@, 93, & @, 97, boating-voter,I think You have nailed it and are talking a lot of sense!, Useful Cricketer as well by the sound of it & a thinker, Captain Material maybe?.
