cont/this is why top players will now concentrate on T-20 & F-50 they can show they are up to playing well b4 25,000-60,000 AND get selected for TEST teams as well as T-20 & F-50& this is why the so called '100-thingy' will fail - NO ONE anywhere in the World ( incl UK ) is in the slightest bit interested in 100-thingy we ALL ( including players ) ONLY interested in T-20 F-100 & Tests
@683 "hard yards"? Rashid didn't appear overnight. Spotted by Warne's mentor, Terry Jenner when he was 14, Rashid worked his way up Yorks/Eng setups, debuting for Yorks in 2006; going on to Eng U19, Lions and A-tours, in-and-out of Test squads since 2008 but rarely a decent run in the XI. In T20 WC final vs WI he took 1-23. Less than Stokes conceded in the last 4 balls. If economy is important.
@683"county cricket is necessary to produce Test players"er this is an urban myth County Cricket dull & boring NOTHING like Test Cricket CC itself produces lot of players who end up playing mediocrely before10-100 spectators - NOTHING like Test Cricket !Players become real players in T-20 & F-50 which is why eg Butler & Rashid are selected for TestsCC runs at BIG £££-Loss
The bizarre first class schedule is at the root of this. Moeen and Rashid have both been picked on the back of white ball cricket which is bizarre to say the least. Leach and Bess must be extremely frustrated. The ECB has to decide what it wants in the future as some cricketers play little white ball cricket so they will be rusty when test matches come around.
673 - county cricket is necessary to produce Test players. Especially a bowler, they need that time, they need to learn their variations and stick delivery, they need those overs. My mate Hawzeeboy thinks different because Warne played only a few State games before selection, but he was still bowling over a hundred overs a week with a red ball at St. Kilda’s. He did his hard yards. Has Rashid?
This comment was removed because it broke the house rules. Explain
@679 If Rashid plays in all the Eng series (Tests, ODIs, T20s etc), he probably won't have time to play much county cricket at all, such is the demanding itinerary of international cricket. E.g Root has hardly played for Yorks. Besides, cricket is so fickle....one minute you're MOTM/MOTS/, next you're blamed for a series debacle. Look at Moeen - pre-Ashes, post Ashes
#679Well not all brave, ethically, fair minded men are morons..look at.................erm. ?
If they are in the same situation in a year's time and Rashid is still not playing red-cricket, he will not be chosen for England. Smith has, rightly, made that clear. If you want to play for England, play in the County Championship.(Agnew)The only thing is if rashid delivers successfully in all the series in between and then refuses to play cc then who will be the moron to deselect him?
#662 Atheletico...Yeah New Road, ace..mind you without looking at my fixture list isn't New Road coming to Scarborough festy..to play Englands second eleven.. lol....and totally , totally agree bout the test fixtures......spot on
did the selectors look at the cc stats because they don't seem to know what is a good average.
Don't listen to Michael Knows it all he is the lowest of the low a Yorkshire man ? who was actually born in Lancashire a total hypocrite. Is Rashid the spinner who is likely to take the most wickets if so play him.
County cricketers suffering due to this selection can be put into perspective. Let's consider what happens each time England pick someone who was not born or grew up in England, does that stop English children from trying or do they just trudge off the field saying well pietersen, stokes, lamb or smith will just land and take our places anyway so we give up. If you are good enough you keep trying!
James have you had the right medical tests? I really don’t think a racist organisation would have picked so many players from so many different heritage backgrounds over the years. Nasser Hussain as captain over 20 years ago when society was more inclined to be that way? If anything they have been quite forward in their appointments
If someone thinks the only path and the only method for producing a world class cricketer is by playing county cricket they are officially nuts.County cricket will continue to produce quality cricketers but it is absurd to suggest that's the only way to nurture talent and to have it as a pre condition for selection is just plain ludicrous. Individual circumstances count for a lot in real life.
Rashid shouldn't have been selected out of principle. You can't expect county players to work had, improve themselves, and then overlook them for someone who didn't want to play. More players are likely to turn their back on county cricket as a result of this. But you can't blame Rashid. It's not his fault he was selected. But he really needs a performance now.
Apologies to Rich - James the sun has really got to you. Keep up the good work however as the tears are still running down my legs.
