Is a mentally v tough game and would say age and experience are key for top 4 players (unless exceptional). (Look at those from Gooch thro Trescothick to Cook about when they hit form; late 20s on). The other pt for England is don't play cr*p spinners, just because that's what they are. Rashid meant we played with 10 men. Gt Mooen was back. Better with a geuine batting all rounder than a token.
England team.Cook Burns Curran Root Bairstow Stokes Buttler Ali Rashid Broad AndersonThis team will cover all conditions and will allow other players to be slotted in when Some need rested or reach the end of their careers and need replaced , or as happens temporarily Loose a bit of form.
@222 Brass Hat. Collingwood??? Don’t let him near the England side, that’s just ‘jobs for the boys’. He’s a coaching disaster. Every time he’s been involved with England they have been pathetic. And to crown it all he took the A team to play the West Indies A team and they were annihilated. Sky did a video diary where all the players seemed to do was drink and clown around. Embarrassing.
Maybe Browne and Burns can open at the Oval?! If Moeen is given a shot at number 3 then it can be argued that the rest of the side is settled. Root at 4, Stokes at 5 and Buttler at 6. Stokes & Buttler have shown they can adapt and bat like a true test batsman, occupying the crease. Bairstow with the gloves at 7. Curran at 8, Jack Leach or Adil Rashid at 9. Broad at 10 and Jimmy at 11.
I feel we need to define the opening role. I would say bat 20 overs and get 40 runs between you. We have enough fire power when the ball is older but our stroke makers are being undone by a newish ball. It may seem fanciful but the most correct players in and around are Woakes and Stokes. Both play through the V and when you use the full face of the bat you have more chance against a new ball.
I never thought I'd see an uglier batsman than Gary Ballance in an England shirt but then they managed to go and find Jennings...
Carragher spitting on a school girl sums Liverpool up.
In English conditions we should play 3 opening batsman. The average thing is a myth ! Vaughan averaged mid 30s for Yorkshire Tresckothic late 20s when he got picked. Mark Ramprakash avg 50 plus couldn’t cut it
Money ball idea from baseball is surely the way to go. its not about averages, its how the runs are scored, how you your wicket is lost. can a guy who regularly nicks off be included over a guy who wholes out every game. Are they better than batter who is out to seamers on a good pitch, spinners on a dusty pitch or swingers in cloudy conditions? E.Smith, J.Taylor, you are the keepers of our game
Just slot in Burns, Vince and Hildreth for Cook, Jennings and Bairstow and most of the problems will have been addressed (if not necessarily solved). Jennings just has to go after the first innings catastrophe. Cook looks past it. Bairstow shouldn't be in the side with a broken finger. The replacements can hardly do worse.
People seem to be talking about the abundance of allrounders as a bad thing but we should be celebrating it. Boycott says you need five specialist batsmen but you don't, he's just being old-fashioned. If not Moeen there's Stokes, Woakes and now Curran all have the talent to bat 3. Look at all the people who wrote off Buttler as a white-ball only player now eating humble pie.
Cook, Jennings, Ali, Root, Bairstow, Rashid, Broad, Anderson. All have lower batting averages with Root as captain than under Cook. It is not a top order problem. Seems to be a coaching/captaincy problem...
CookVinceAliRootBairstow StokesButtler (wk)CurranWoakesBroadAndersonVince will come good this time. Buttler and Bairstow are interchangeable at 5 and 7 depending on who's going to keep keeping, but If Jonny's going to keep sulking he could lose his place altogether to Ollie Pope!

I think and hope Jennings will be dropped for Vince who'll open with Cook. I believe those two will complement each other perfectly and Vince will be Cook's long-term successor. When Alastair retires that will only then open the door for someone like Burns at 2.Seeing as Bairstow and Stokes don't seem to want to be 3rd opener and Moeen does, I think he'll stay there at 3 and might just succeed
