I'm really disappointed by the team selected for the third team...On what basis was Denly picked, do the selectors not view these players before making selections...it's joke to take him and then decide he's not up to the task..And why Broad, we know what he can do...give Olly Stone a run out, let's take a look at him.
Really impressed with the selection team these days. Ringing the changes, both by skill and luck, and we are winning.2 wrongs never make a right and they quickly, and correctly realized they made a mistake with Denly.Whether he could have scored any runs at 3 we will never know.Good luck to him anyway.Right back to work. This boat won't load itself 🤗
Bairstow is probably going to have to change his batting style to play at 3. He might well be capable of doing this as he has done so in the past Root has more than likely wanted Bairstow to play at 3 for some time now and been waiting for the opportunity to move him up and take the gloves off him so he doesn’t have to bat there!
We have a good squad of players now. Getting the balance right is important though, especially with so many 'all-rounders' in the squad. Horses for courses makes sense going forward, so big name players may sometimes need to stand down. I hope James Vince can find a way back into the team and nail down the number three role.
Did we go to S/L without a number 3 batsman? If we didn't, it was a very strange thing to do. If we took one, who is it? Was it suppose to be Denly, if not why take him, certainly not for his bowling. Of the recent 3/4 position, on tour Malan seems to have been the best. Had a poor couple of games back in England and is now forgotten. At the present rate of change Jimmy will be there soon.
Selection issues are good news. It show England are in a good state. I suspect JB needs to perform batting at number 3 or he will not get back in. If he sees out the first 40-50 balls with 30 to his name then he could explode. An explosive hitter in the top order is the missing ingredient for England to become the number 1 team. Though they need to focus on replacements for JA and SB.
@333. I totally agree. I think on these pitches it's more about aggression. 4 or 5 over bursts to rough up the Sri Lankans if they get too comfortable. England should be looking for a 3 - 0 win here. If we lose by 30/40 runs they'll be the runs Woakes may have scored
I've no problem with Bairstow replacing the injured Curran but I'm surprised they went for Broad and not Woakes. I doubt the seamers will have any influence on the match at all; will they even bowl 30 overs between them in the match? On this basis any workload could be shared between Stokes and Woakes with Woakes having the added advantage of being a much better batsman than Broad.
Funny comments about why SB asked Richard Hadlee for advice...one of the best bowlers of all time...up there with Jimmy Glen Mcgrath Courtney Walsh or David Lawrence
327 & 328 - Diversity is a factor that brings out surprising results. Some dismissals occur unexpectedly because of the ‘he will never get me out' syndrome leading to shots being played that would never be thought about when facing 'regular' bowlers. There is also the just before the break factor in bowling a couple of overs before lunch or tea.
