Our test form has been good up until this summer?I must've imagined that all out for 50 something against New Zealand in a humiliating defeat then. I must've been dreaming for the Windies tour as well. How many times bowled out for under 100 in the last 18 months again? We played quite well in the series against India last summer (cough cough Sam 'invisible man' Curran).
Averages over 50 when not captain. Now more experienced but averaging 30.Stokes would be my captain with Root left to focus just on his batting.
Farbrace erred. He should have nominated Boris Johnson for the captaincy
My changes moving forward would be 1 remove Root as captain as he is tactically naïve and his batting has suffered from the responsibility, and 2 Drop Roy. He is not up to test cricket.
Collymore should have been given Boycott's Knighthood, at least it would have shown diversity.
Don't agree but, so far, a better human being than the misogynistic bigot Boycott who has inexplicably received a Knighthood?......he should be banned from the radio.....Listen to the interview on the Today programme he's a disgrace.
Root is the 'root' of the problems England have, he doesn't score the big runs and his captaincy is average and affecting his below par batting even more.
Surely there must be some fine young batsman somewhere (probably in South Africa with hopefully a UK born grandparent ) who would love to captain England. After all no one is expecting the next England coach to be English Remember Britain is a diverse global nation and recruits from the world
2 types of captaincy command respect, the calm, unflappable, fair and gracefully skilled type, that Bobby Moore personified, Andrew Strauss? Or the supremely tough, hard, unstoppable and unquestionable force that was Martin Johnson. Brian Close? Which of these is Root? Or is there another kind, the kind that has 66 on his shirt and a mass of bumfluff on his chin?
Maybe thats why he's ex-assistant coach.
Root should not be captain. But then again looking at the team there is no other that seems prime to take the role. Please keep it away from Stokes. We do need our best player having his game blunted by the burden of being captain too. I'm not convinced Buttler would be any better either. If this was a few years down the line I would be saying Woakes could do it but too soon
Paul Farbrace should also recommend Joe for knighthood. He is the greatest England skipper in living memory, a real leader of men. They pay attention to every word of wisdom that comes out of his mouth.
I like Root but I don’t know if he has the tactical nous to be captain. Bring in Gillespie as coach and work it out from there. In terms of character, I would prefer to have Root as captain over Steve Smith, win, lose or draw.
It's just a matter of time. Root will stand down as captain eventually because even he will realise that he is just rubbish at captaincy. Unfortunately the England hierarchy are too stubborn to make changes. I can only hope that whoever takes over as the new coach demands that he can choose who should be captain and therefore force Root out.
Root needs to stay as captain but concentrate on red ball and select only players who are willing to specialize; the best in each position.ECB to up specialist red ball players pay to give them a viable choice over white ball.ECB to choose between 100 and 20/20,not both so they can extend red ball season.Long term kids need to be trained red ball techniques and then move on to white ball.
Australia came to England to take part in the one day world cup..... the test team came to retain the Ashes. That was their focus. the goal of the summer.....England's focus was the WC. That win took everything, the kind of everything the Aussies hadn't used up. They both won the tournament they prepped for.....both teams had a great summer.
