Giro d'Italia: Rodriguez retains lead in Italy

Joaquim Rodriguez

Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez retained the lead in the general classification of the Giro d'Italia as the 16th stage was won by his compatriot Jon Izagirre.

Euskaltel-Euskadi rider Izagirre pulled clear of a 10-man breakaway group on the final climb to claim victory.

He finished 16 seconds ahead of Androni Giacattoli-Venezuela's Alessandro De Marchi and Stef Clement of Rabobank.

Rodriguez (Katusha) retained the pink jersey ahead of Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda), who he leads by 30 seconds.

Rodriguez reclaimed the lead from Hesjedal in Sunday's 15th stage ahead of a two-day rest period.

Wednesday's 17th stage is a 186km trek through the Dolomites from Falzes to Cortina d'Ampezzo, the first of three major mountain stages in four days.

The Giro ends on 27 May in Milan.
