Belgium's Philippe Gilbert wins the World Championship road race with Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen second and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde third.

The 30-year-old one-day specialist burst away from the field on the final ascent of the race's defining climb, the Cauberg, to take the title.

Jonathan Tiernan-Locke was the highest placed British rider in 19th, whilst defending champion Mark Cavendish retired after 200km of the 267km race.
