52. Helen"Froome all the way to Paris!! ... all this nonsense about an adverse is because he rides for Sky. If it was a smaller team, would not have been blown up so big."Because he would have been punished immediately, like Petacchi was.
My feeling is this sport should really be forgotten all it has become is a testing ground for chemists and their drugs.
@51. Red hare is right. Sagan is not the best sprinter and never has been but he has won many green jerseys.Cav seems a beaten man and looks like others have the beating of him now.
@51No, that’s not true either. The points jersey is for the most consistent finisher. That’s why Sagan wins it. He wins points on finishes like stages 5 and 6, where the sprinters all came in with the gruppetto. The points classification in all GTs is the same, by the way. Vuelta or Tour or Giro, it’s for the rider who finishes regularly high across the stages.
Froome all the way to Paris!! He is a professional & all this nonsense about an adverse is because he rides for Sky. If it was a smaller team, would not have been blown up so big.
@46 re hareStop splitting hairs by criticising someone for referring to the green jersey as being a points jersey as opposed to a sprinters jersey. We all know it's aimed at sprinters, which is why the points are for sprint finishes at the end and intermediate sprints. It's not like the points jersey in the vuelta where climbers and GC guys can also win
Have to agree with Adam Blythe, Cav needs to start going to the line. If we can get 4,5 or 6, then he can think about getting 3rd and then a win.Super honesty by Cav yesterday, admitting he just can't go those speeds anymore.Cav, a great British sporting legend
I am new to watching the tours i only started watching when wiggo won it , its not just about the leaders jersey there is the teams race , sprinters race , time trialists , mountain climbers and young riders races within the GC race just brilliant to watch .
@41 @43 In 2011, I saw the TdF come through Olonzac, a small town in the Hérault. Not shown on TV, as the town rejected the fees for it. The commercial side is the huge procession of carnival style advertising vehicles throwing out free product samples. It takes far longer to pass than the race itself, gone in a flash. Yes - TdF was invented just to sell newspapers. It's much more commercial now.
@46Some of that is just plain wrong. It’s a points jersey, not a sprinters jersey. Sprinters don’t always win it. In fact, they’ve mostly given up trying.
41 mickytThere are 3 races going on within the main event. The white jersey for the riders under 25, polka dot for the king of the mountains and green for the sprinters. All have prize money attached therefore there have to be flat stages so that the sprinters can properly compete. Mixing it up as you put it would be difficult logistically.
41. Posted by mickyt Maybe you should watch Nat geo channel instead.
The riders also make the racing. It’s been a very stressful first six stages, what with crashes, narrow roads, and annoyingly steep climbs that are too short to be selective. No one wanted to go in a break because everyone wanted a soft pedal day. Which is fair enough. It can’t be full on exciting all the time. Lots of riders will be dreading Sunday’s stage.
@41 Micky the tdf is a huge advertising campaign, that's what it's all about. It was effectively about selling newspapers, but look at the riders, covered in endorsements, and the route is designed to showcase France, the town's compete hard with each other to be part of it and despite it being a long flat boring stage the excitement at the side of the road is massive!
@41 I think you’ve got a fair point. The problem is I don’t think they can move the Alps to accommodate! If stages are flat, and therefor made for sprint endings, maybe they shouldn’t be quite so long but I think it’s all part of the ‘show’. Its all very French and we should try to appreciate it for that. Not everything in life has to ‘entertain’ us 24/7.
Why so many boring stages the first week is so predictable long flat boring stages i only watch the last 10 mins of the races. Why not mix it up a bit in the first week add a few hills etc .This is doing nothing to promote or encorage new viewers to the sport no one wants to sit 5 hours watching this looking at castles and lakes etc on tv. Maybe i should watch Nat geo channel instead.
