Robbie Green hopes a fresh approach for the BDO World Championship will see him go beyond the quarter-finals at Lakeside for the first time in 2014.

The fourth seed from Liverpool, beaten in the last eight by eventual finalist Tony O'Shea last year, has reduced his schedule in recent months.

He dropped just two legs in his first-round defeat of Richie George.

"I feel fresh, I've not done a lot of the tournaments between September and December," Green, 39, told BBC Sport.

"This is the one we want. It's no good winning [throughout the year] and then coming here and flopping in front of the cameras. We have to come here and perform."

Green's meeting with close friend and fellow Englishman George, the son of former twice runner-up Bobby and a semi-finalist on his Lakeside debut last year, was tipped to be one of the most exciting ties of the first round.

But after edging a nervy first set, Green took control of the match and eased to a 3-0 victory, hitting a 10-dart leg along the way.

He continued: "Neither of us played like we can and Richie struggled. I felt like I was waiting him to click, as I know he can, and he just didn't. I kept beating him to the punch.

"The last couple of sets were better than the first. I feel like I can improve on that.

"It's no good throwing your best darts in your first game. I want to be consistent, play well throughout and beat the man in front of me in each game I play. All I can concentrate on is my next game."
