BBC Sport - Wheelchair hurling offers sporting chance to disabled youngsters

Wheelchair hurling gains in popularity

Dungiven 19-year-old Ryan O'Connor says wheelchair hurling has helped boost his spirits after he had both legs amputated.

The sport is now being played in a number of Northern Ireland leisure centres and players' ages range between four and 50.

"I thought it was all over for me when my legs were amputated," added Ryan, who had lost his legs following complications after a heart transplant.

"But for people who are permanent wheelchair uses, it's not the end of the road, just the beginning of something else."
