Great Britain team take European showjumping bronze

Britain took bronze on the last day of team competition at the European Showjumping Championships in Madrid.

Ben Maher, Nick Skelton, John Whitaker and Guy Williams started Friday in fourth place behind Holland, Germany and France but stepped up to the challenge in style to take a medal.

The success follows European gold for the dressage team and European bronze for the eventing team last month.

Skelton also moved into second place in the individual event.

Individual medals will be decided on Sunday.

Britain team manager Rob Hoekstra said: "The horses are jumping well, they're operating well and we've just been a bit unlucky with the water but then again so have many.

"If we can keep this formula going then we're in with a chance of more medals. Lots of things can happen in the last day of competition especially when people are riding under extreme pressure.

"We're fighting to be on the podium, we're close to it and if we carry on like this then it's definitely possible."
