Southampton beat Charlton and edged closer to an automatic promotion place in League One.
The visitors should have taken the lead but Scott Wagstaff somehow skied his effort from six yards out.
Guly Do Prado put the Saints ahead when he latched onto a Lee Barnard pass and fired in.
And the duo combined again for the second, Barnard nodding in Do Prado's cross to move the Saints to within two points of Huddersfield in second.
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Solent:
"It was an excellent (first) goal. We passed the ball about well and I was really pleased about that.
"I'm really pleased with all the players and the effort they put in, it was a big effort tonight.
"We've got to keep chipping away. One game at a time and we'll see where it takes us."
