Derby rivals Coleraine and Ballymena battled out a 1-1 draw at the Showgrounds on Friday night.
Overlapping defender Michael Smith put United into a 17th-minute lead with a superb right-strike shot after Gary McCutcheon created the chance.
Coleraine substitute Marc Mukendi got the equaliser in the 70th minute.
He dived to head past United keeper Ryan Brown after Stephen Carson, another home sub, had delivered the cross from the left wing.
