Southampton striker Rickie Lambert hails fans influence
Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has praised Saints fans for their vocal backing during Saturday's 2-0 win at Leyton Orient.
A travelling support of 3,209 saw Lambert score and create Lee Barnard's winner to send the Saints above Huddersfield and into second place.
"Last year they were superb here and this year they were unbelievable," Lambert, 29, told BBC Radio Solent.
"It was like a home game and it doesn't half spur us on."
Lambert continued: "I can't believe they were allowed so many tickets and to get the win and put us in that position is brilliant.
"We definitely deserved it. We were under pressure in the first half but overall we deserved the win."
Southampton face Lambert's former club Rochdale on Tuesday evening and the striker says his side are determined to maintain their automatic promotion spot.
"Obviously we've been fighting for that position and we'll keep on fighting to cement it," said the ex-Bristol Rovers forward.
"It was a massive win [on Saturday] but it was also good results elsewhere that managed us to get into second spot.
"Hopefully we'll go to Rochdale on Tuesday now and get a result there."
