Plymouth kept alive their faint hopes of survival with victory over Dagenham & Redbridge, who are now deep in relegation trouble of their own.
The only goal came from Rory Patterson, who drove home a 25-yard free-kick after Jon Nurse fouled Kari Arnason.
The home side piled on the pressure, but Darren Currie, Peter Gain and Romain Vincelot had efforts blocked.
And Plymouth ended up with 10 men when Patterson was sent off late on for fouling Danny Green.
The Greens are now five points behind the Daggers, who could drop into the relegation zone if Walsall or Bristol Rovers win their games in hand.
Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid told BBC Radio Devon:
"The lads have dug in and deserved that today and what I've got to say is a difficult place to come.
"It was a good, honest and professional performance by the players - everyone did their job today.
"It gives a chance doesn't it. It makes it interesting and I just hope we don't get deducted any more points or we'll need snookers."
