Cheltenham 0-1 Macclesfield

Macclesfield took a big step towards League Two survival with victory at floundering Cheltenham.

Tyronne Barnett notched the game's only goal with a superbly executed header from Matthew Hamshaw's centre.

Nat Brown's header was cleared off the line and Barnett forced a good save from home keeper Scott Brown as the Silkmen dominated after the break.

JJ Melligan's deep cross almost caught visiting keeper Jose Veiga off-guard as the hosts rarely threatened.

POST-MATCH REACTION

Macclesfield Town manager Gary Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester:

"They put a fantastic rearguard performance up and I think we were worth the win in the end.

"We had to defend as a unit and we did and then we hit them on the break a few times and could have pinched a second one to be honest.

"I thought we could freshen it up a little bit as this weather takes it out of you and hopefully now they'll be okay for Monday.

Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yeates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

"We've got to be really up for the next few games, we can't panic, if we do then we're in trouble.

"There was a lack of guile today which comes with a lack of confidence. The players knew it wasn't good enough and they know it hasn't been good enough lately.

"We know we're in a scrap and the players need to look at the table tonight and realise that we can't go down and the only way to do that is to win the next three games."
