Southend United have handed a one-year deal to midfielder Lee Sawyer.
The 21-year-old, in his third spell at Roots Hall, signed a contract until the end of the season in January.
He has since featured 14 times for Paul Sturrock's side but was ruled out for the rest of the season last month with an ankle injury.
"When I joined at the start of the year I was very grateful to Southend for giving me another chance," he told the club website.
"I'd like to think I've shown glimpses of what I am capable of before I got injured."
Boss Paul Sturrock added: "I've been pleased with the way Lee has come into the side and performed.
"Off the pitch he has been no problems at all and on it he has shown glimpses that he can be a player for us.
"He now just needs to learn to play the game the way I like it played and he will be a real asset next season."
Meanwhile the Shrimpers have appointed former Millwall chairman Stewart Till to the club's board.
He is currently chairman of film distribution company Icon UK.
