Eamon Zayed notched a hat-trick for Derry at the Brandywell

Derry City stay second in the Airtricity League Premier Division after they put seven goals past UCD in Friday's clash at the Brandywell.

Gareth McGlynn scored the opener on 25 after a superb James McClean run.

Eamon Zayed doubled Derry's lead on 51 before McGlynn made it 3-0 on 58 after more great work by McClean.

McClean's 64th-minute goal was followed by a David McDaid penalty after Ciaran Nangle's dismissal before Zayed hit late goals to complete his hat-trick.

McGlynn was a surprise inclusion after being injured in Monday's 3-0 defeat by Sligo and the Donegal man went on to have a tremendous game for the Candystripes.

Manager Stephen Kenny was without Kevin Deery, Emmett Friars and Eddie McCallion after the dismissals against Sligo but Derry were back in top form four days on.

McGlynn, McClean and Danny Lafferty all went close early on before McGlynn fired the home side ahead on 25 after a jinking McClean run.

McClean then volleyed the ball to the UCD net but the effort was ruled out for offside while UCD keeper Gerard Barron tipped a Zayed shot onto the woodwork in first-half injury time.

But Zayed could not be denied on 51 as he swept a McGlynn cross to the net and McClean then set up McGlynn to hit Derry's third goal seven minutes later.

McGlynn returned the compliment on 64 with a cross which McClean fired to the net and sub McDaid's penalty increased Derry's lead to 5-0 on 78.

McDaid had been felled himself by Nangle and the UCD full-back received his marching orders.

Libyan international Zayed completed the rout with strikes on 83 and 85 as Derry remain three points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers who defeated Sligo 1-0 on Friday night.
